Race Alteration Policy

Race officials and the marathon medical support team reserve the right to cancel any or all parts of this event if they feel participants are in danger. Refunds will not be issued if the race is canceled or ended due to factors out of the committee’s control.

It is the primary goal of the Marquette Marathon to ensure a safe event for all involved. We will not expose participants or the community to undue risk resulting from the staging of our event.

There may be conditions that lead to our decision that it is unsafe to continue with the race. While we recognize the aspirations and commitment of those who have entered the race, we will make decisions about the race based on the participation of the entire.

Furthermore, if the community resources are threatened, we will act to protect them from unnecessary stress. Specifically, when weather or other physical conditions present a danger to participants, we maintain the right to cancel the race. Less threatening conditions could result in an alteration of the course or race length to promote a safer result for the participants.

These conditions will not result in the refunding of race entry fees or future race credit. The staging of a race of this magnitude results in substantial expense prior to race day. Thus, in the event of a forced cancellation of the event, it is very likely that the financial impact on the race would not be any different than if the race were held without compromise.

The medical director and race director will decide on the cancellation or alteration of the race. Before the race, the medical director will apprise the runners of weather conditions and advise them on how to adjust to them. In the event of a course evacuation, marathon personnel or the City of Marquette Police will direct runners to areas of shelter.

Severe thunderstorms with the threat of lightning that are threatening the course and are forecasted to continue throughout the day of the event may result in the cancellation of the event for all participants. In case of severe heat and humidity, the medical directors and race director will have the authority to either cancel the race or shorten the length of the race.
